Obituary of Cornelius John Weed
Cornelius John Weed of Larchmont, NY, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025, at home after a short illness. John was born on September 8, 1939, to Joseph John Weed and Ruth Pedersen Weed of Larchmont, NY.
John always had a curiosity for how things worked, and he enjoyed fixing them, especially electronics. This led him to a long career in Broadcast Engineering. He began his career at a small radio station in Beacon, New York, then moved on to WLIB, a jazz station in New York, where he was able to combine his love of jazz with many jazz greats. As a jazz collector, he had a talent for identifying any song he heard by name and artist. He later joined The ABC Radio Networks in New York, where he retired in 2005.
John was a lifelong sailor, a member of the Larchmont Yacht Club for over 55 years, and a member of the Larchmont Race Committee for over 40 years. He began sailing as a toddler on his family’s boat in Larchmont. He enjoyed many summers sailing at the Club, where he participated in the Junior Sailing program as a child and competed in regattas up and down Long Island Sound. He went on to compete in the Ludder 16s, International One Design, and Shields class boats. He loved sharing his knowledge of sailing and of the local conditions that Long Island Sound is famous for. After retirement, John enjoyed cruising, especially in the majestic waters of British Columbia.
John leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years, Sandra Mandeville Weed, two sons, John William Weed ( Caroline) and Owen Cahill Weed, his grandchildren, Freya, Eva, and Madeleine, the apples of his eye. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph Weed and sister Elizabeth “Betty” Foulk.
John will be remembered for his quick wit, infectious laughter, and generous spirit.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a junior sailing program of your choice in John's name.
A service celebrating John’s life is planned for Friday, October 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Augustine’s Church.
