Obituary of Adriana Maria Jervis van Nes
Adriana Maria Jervis van Nes
Adriana (Addi) was born on January 16, 1940, in Magelang, Indonesia. As a young child, she and her family endured the hardships of a Japanese internment camp during World War II before being repatriated to the Netherlands. There, she earned a degree in early childhood education.
In 1964, Adriana moved to the United States as an au pair. While working at St. Barnabas Orphanage in New York City, she met her beloved husband, James Jervis. They shared 54 years of marriage together. She supported James’s long academic career and lovingly cared for him following a debilitating stroke in 2016.
A longtime resident of Larchmont, Addi was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She taught Sunday school at Larchmont Avenue Church for many years and was known for her warmth, humor, and deep care for others. She loved her Dutch roots, cherished time with family, and found joy in caregiving, arts & crafts, and community service.
Addi died peacefully at home on May 30, 2025, at age 85. She is survived by her husband James; daughters Astrid and Cornelia (Coco); grandchildren August, Shiloh, and Wilhelmina (Willa); brothers Anthony and Pieter and by her sisters-in-law, Henriëtte van Nes and Alie van Nes, who reside in Belgium and the Netherlands, respectively and many beloved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Cornelis van Nes, Neeltje Adriana van Nes, and Wilhelmina (Miep) Paardekooper; her brother, Willem van Nes; her brother-in-law, Clarence Coleridge; and her sisters-in-law, Euna Coleridge and Marjan van Nes.
Addi's kindness, resilience, compassion, and joyful spirit was a blessing to all and will be deeply missed and remembered lovingly.
