Obituary of Nancy Loretta Thompson
In Loving Memory of Nancy L. Thompson October 18, 1939 – May 5, 2025 Nancy L. Thompson, formerly of Chatham, NJ, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, after a short and challenging battle with kidney cancer. She was 85.
Born in Moorestown, NJ, she moved to Chatham with her beloved husband, Bob Thompson, in 1966, where she lived for nearly 50 years before relocating to The Osborn in Rye, NY, in 2015. A graduate of Trenton State College, Nancy was a teacher before embracing her most cherished role—being a mom and later, Nana.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bob, and leaves behind two daughters, Kirsten (Larry) and Lisa (Greg), and five grandsons who were her pride and joy: Andrew (and his fiancée, Ali), Tim, Daniel, Tyler, and Matt, along with 2 nieces, a nephew and their families.
She found deep joy in her lifelong Chatham friendships and was active in both the Chatham United Methodist Church and the Chatham Township Presbyterian Church, where she founded the Widows Support Group—one of many quiet but meaningful ways she helped others.
In addition to raising her family, Nancy stayed active in the community. She worked as a substitute teacher, served on the Executive Board of the Library of the Chathams, volunteered for children’s story time and Meals on Wheels. She had a natural curiosity and a genuine interest in others, always taking time to really know people. Relationships were very important to her.
In keeping with her wish for “no hoopla,” there will be no funeral service, only a private graveside gathering for immediate family. Our family is forever grateful to the many friends and caregivers in Chatham and at the Osborn who offered her friendship and comfort along the way.
While we will miss her dearly, we find peace knowing she is finally reunited with our Dad and in the arms of the Lord. In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to honor Nancy’s memory by making a donation to one of the charities she supported: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Smile Train.
